Science Education at at Top Research University

Graduate Education and Research
Washington State University is one of the two nationally ranked research universities in the state of Washington. Last year our researchers received more than $100 million in research funding. Our comprehensive list of graduate programs offers over 100 graduate degrees in 75 areas.

More than 25 of these graduate degrees are offered by the College of Sciences in the biological and physical sciences and in mathematics and statistics. Many have attractive competitive fellowship packages available. Particular research strengths lie in the biosciences, reproductive biology, materials science, shock physics and environmental science. Biotechnology is also an area of emphasis with particular focus in the areas of bioinformatics and genomics.

Opportunities for interdisciplinary graduate study and research abound, including in our Biotechnology Training and Materials Science programs, and through our Center for Reproductive Biology and the Center for Integrated Biotechnology. A recent agreement signed with the National Marine Fisheries Service, initiated the Cooperative Institute for Salmon Research and Science and will help shape our leading-edge research on endangered salmonids. Many of the nation’s top shock physicists have been trained in Washington State University’s Institute for Shock Physics.

Undergraduate Education
Research and laboratory experiences are also emphasized in undergraduate science programs at Washington State University. Undergraduates have the opportunities to learn to use the latest research equipment in the labs of our top scientists and often work on independent research projects.

In their first jobs, many WSU science graduates report that their laboratory skills more than matched those of other new employees with degrees from other top institutions. Job skills are further enhanced by the experiences students have in completing team projects.

Some 40 undergraduate fields of study are offered by the College of Sciences. To help our undergraduates succeed in their chosen field, a range of special help programs are available. They range from free tutoring to assistance finding a study partner. Most science departments have their own computer lab equipped with specialized software for the use of their undergraduate majors. Science majors also make frequent use of the Science Learning Instructional Center (SLIC), which offers such things as course-specific software, practice exams, journal articles, class checkout material, and molecule models.

Improving Science Education Statewide
The College of Sciences has a strong commitment to improving science education across the state of Washington. The Science Mathematics Engineering Education Center (SMEEC) has devised several innovative programs to update K-12 teachers’ knowledge of the newest scientific advances through in-service and pre-service programs. An equipment loan program provides the advanced instrumentation many K-12 schools can not afford for their science classes. Another program assists Washington high school chemistry classes to link to and operate the University’s laboratory equipment, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging machines.
