Advising in the College of Sciences
How To Get An Advisor
The steps students take to enroll at Washington State University, choose a major, and get advice about what courses to take are outlined below:
- Send in a University Application (either on-line or paper) and transcripts.
- Receive offer of University admission.
- Pay enrollment deposit.
- Receive Notice of Admission.
- Most students attend one of the nine summer ALIVE sessions on campus to receive information from the Student Advising and Learning Center (SALC) about their academic adviser, who is generally in the student’s area of indicated interest. The advisor provides career advice and guidance on course selections.
- When students
have completed 24 semester hours of coursework, they may officially
enroll or “certify” in their chosen academic major.
Then the department, in which the major is located, will assign
an academic advisor from that department.
Some Important Keys to Success
Students who wish to graduate in four years need to plan carefully. Success depends, in part, on timely completion of the WSU General Education Requirements and early completion of the basic science and mathematics courses that are prerequisites for advanced classes that will be taken later. All bachelor degree programs in the College of Sciences can be completed with four years of study, if attention is paid to the requirements of the chosen curriculum. (Earning a teaching certificate in addition to an academic major, may take an additional semester in some majors.)
Students intending
to transfer to WSU from other colleges, universities, or community
colleges need to plan ahead to meet the General Education Requirements
and to take the prerequisite courses they will need for their intended
majors.
