Comments: I am a math teacher at Kamiakin High School. Thanks for developing this site. Although the focus is entirely on the nuts and bolts of algebra, it does serve a purpose. It lets college-bound students review the basics of algebra that they are expected to know, and it gives me a resource for my students. I sometimes have them write step-by-step explanations of a process that they are learning. Your explanations will give them examples of one part of mathematics.

Comments: I find these problems difficult - I am 33 and returning to school. Thank you for preparing me on what to expect. I went to the book store and got a book to brush up on skills not applied in 15 years and I now can get the answer to problem #1! Any other recommendations??

Comments: I used the problems to help prepare me for the placement test. The only problem was when I clicked for an explanation of a problem the window never came up and repeatedly reported an error. This affected my study resource. It really affects the studying process.

Comments: I was trying to use your website to check on materials to be used for school students. There is a problem with the Review, and Text portions of the website. Perhaps the computer is down. It is 9:10 AM on Friday, June 18. I really think this website will be helpful to students. It needs to be fully functional however.

Comments: i was preparing for the sat's and i came across your web site. I was doing a certain "Solving Avsolute Value Equation" problem, and discovered that you infact did not proof read your answer because you had the answer as None of the above yet the correct answer is in fact "A"

Comments: I'm taking the math placement test tomorrow and these practice problems were great for getting me a little more prepared. However, the help sites weren't working, so I still can't remember how to do synthetic division! Hope it's not on the test! :-)

Comments: Intended or not, the implication of this "test" is that all there is of importance in high shool mathematics, or in preparing for college mathematics, is a narrow list of algebraic procedural skills, preferably when applied to rather messy numbers. Are underlying concepts, realistic uses, or alternate representations of any importance? What about concepts from geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics, or discrete mathematics? Please understand that I don't object to the difficulty of any individual items, or to their inclusion in the test, but I do object to the narrowness and dryness of the selection.

Comments: Well, number 1 was rather difficult, but I think I got it. Number 2 was a little easier. Don't even ask me about number 3 because I skipped it. Anywho, I got 36/36 so any major colleges interested in me can MANUALLY mail me.

Comments: Hello. My name is Karma Herron. I am a math student of Mr. David Engelhard in Connell Washington. I am writing concerning WSU Math Day that was recently held at WSU Pullman in the CUB. My purpose of writing is to request a copy of the Speed Team Winners for Small Schools. That is a Small Schools Competition (winners & losers) Bracket for the Speed Team Competitions. If I am directing this letter toward the wrong division, I ask that it please be forwarded to the proper department and persons whom it concerns. Thank you very much. I appreciate your help. Please send copy to: Connell High School ATTN: David Engelhard Math Department P.O. Box 829 1100 W. Clark Connell, WA 99326 Thanks Karma Herron

Comments: Regarding my previous comments, I now see that the chart does not mean that the absolute value of a negative number is a negative number, but rather, that if "a" is a negative number, the absolute value of it is the opposite of it, ie, -a. So the absolute value of a negative number becomes a positive number. The bottom line is that the absolute value of any number is a positive number! Thanks.

Comments: Regarding the "get help" feature for problem 1 - Your chart states that the absolute value for a negative number is a negative number....if I read it correctly. Shouldn't the absolute value always be a positive number. For example the absolute value of -5 is +5 ie, it is 5 units away from 0.

Comments: To me, these problems represent what is wrong in mathematics education today. Instead of testing what students know or understand about the concepts and applications of mathematics, these problems are only interested in whether students can 'do' the procedures of math. Math is much more than knowledge, rules and procedures but tests like this deliver the message that this is what math is. We are shooting ourselves in the foot if we continue to transmit this tired and inaccurate picture.
