This Web page applies only to the 9:00am section of Math315 taught by Prof. Barnes. Here is the Web page for the other section of Math315 taught by Prof. Genz.

My office hours are Mon.-Tues.-Wed. from 10:15 to 11:30 in Neill 203. Other times may be arranged by appointment, Call 335-3133. My Email address is barnes@mail.wsu.edu and my HomePage is at

The TA for the course is Mr. P. Nag. His office hours are Tue.-Thurs. 1:00-2:30 in Neil 312. His Email is pnag@math.wsu.edu.

The text book for the course is:

Elementary Differential Equations} by Boyce and DePrima 6--th Edition.

You will also need your calculus and linear algebra textbooks for reference.

Grades will be assigned based on the following point scale.

Three One--hour exams
of 100 pts each

300 pts

Final Examination

200 pts

Computer Assignments

30-60 pts

Total

530-60 pts

Dates for the hour exams are:

Sept. 24, 8:30pm in Todd 120
Oct. 27, 6:30pm in Todd 120
Dec. 2, 6:30pm in Todd 120.

These exams will be given in the evening and will be the same for both the 9:10am and 2:10pm sections of Math315.
To compensate for the time spent in the evening we will not have class during Dead Week, Dec. 7, 9, and 11.
The computer assignment will be due sometime in mid November.

The Final exam will be comprehensive. The date for the final exam will be given in a general University announcement.

We will cover material selected from the following chapters. Not all of every chapter will be covered and parts omitted will be indicated at the proper time. This schedule is only approximate.

14 Week Course Schedule

Ch. 1 and 2 First Order Eqns. 2 weeks
Ch. 8 Numerical Methods 2 weeks
Ch. 3 Second Order Eqns. 2 weeks
Ch. 4 Higher Order Eqns. 2 weeks
Ch. 7 Systems of Eqns. 3 weeks
Ch. 5 Power Series 1 week
Ch. 6 Laplace Transform 1 week

The Prerequisites for Math 315 are: Math 171, 172, 220, and 273. If you have questions about your preparation for the course, please see me soon. In particular, we will be using significant amounts of material from linear algebra such as computing determinants, inverse matrices, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Suggested homework problems are given below, however, this homework will not be collected or graded. On the other hand, the Exams will be based upon homework.

There is an instructors manual with solutions to some of the problems on reserve in the Owen Science Library. There are also some of my old Math 315 exams available there.

Homework problems are as follows:
